From idea to realisation:
In 1980, following a traffic accident in the tunnel area of the A 10 motorway, the idea of the AMBULANCE MOTORBIKE was born under the impression that ambulances in congested areas are also considerably transport to the scene of the emergency. Contact with SUZUKI Germany resulted in the commissioning of the first motorbike in Europe on 2 April 1982, a SUZUKI GS 850 with full fairing. This motorbike ( MotR ) was then adapted to become the SANITÄTSMOTORRAD ( SanMotR ) adapted. The necessary paramedic materials were stored in the two side pockets and the MotR was equipped with a radio and blue light system.

On 28 April 1983, this SanMotR was presented in writing to the Bavarian Red Cross ( BRK ) and pictures were enclosed.
On 17 May 1983 we were invited in writing by the Bavarian Red Cross to the 2nd specialist congress of the working group for medical assistance professions from 9 to 11 September 1993 in Garmisch – Partenkirchen to present the SanMotR to the professional audience.
Unfortunately, however, this invitation could not be honoured because the competent authority of the Salzburg provincial government initially refused to issue the corresponding ‘blue light permit’. An established rescue organisation, the ÖRK, as well as its superordinate association organisation rejected this idea as nonsense!
The Sbg. regional government issued a negative decision on the ‘blue light authorisation’ and so the Federal Ministry of Transport was involved with the SanMotR in the appeal proceedings.
The Ministry began a comprehensive investigation and also obtained an opinion from the Austrian Red Cross. Red Cross for an opinion. The BmfV wrote in its later decision:
‘The Austrian Red Cross did not respond to the question, but limited itself to casting doubt on the objecting medical organisation in general …. ’
In Bavaria, the BRK had meanwhile put the idea into practice and initially put five SanMotRs into service between Munich and Salzburg.
Further SanMotRs were deployed in Germany as early as 1985. By 1996, more than 20 SanMotR in Bavaria had been continuously deployed by several German medical organisations. The BMfV obtained documentation from the BRK, which was sent to us on 20 February 1985 together with the together with the favourable decision of the BMfV, in the public interest. assessed. Now our SanMotR PROTOTYP in Austria also had a ‘blue light authorisation’.
The deployment of the ÖRD SanMotR now began…
