About us

Welcome to the new webpage of the International Fire & EMS Motorcycle Response Unit Association (IMRUA), an internationally registered non-profit association based in Luxembourg, EU.

IMRUA is the largest professional association of fire department and emergency medical services workers who perform their duties on motorcycles. IMRUA has also expanded to certain members who work on bicycles and other special rescue vehicles; however our core focus is on 2 wheeled motorcycle response units.
If the topic of Motorcycle Response Units (MRUs) interests you, feel free to follow our webpage and our social media outlets for updates and events related to IMRUA.
IMRUA also sponsors biannual congresses and e-congresses to bring together the most respected experts in various fields related to our work.

What is a Motorcycle Response Unit (MRU)?

An MRU is a two wheeled emergency response vehicle that has been specially outfitted with fire suppression gear, extrication gear or medical gear.

The advantage of using an MRU in a modern metropolitan EMS system is that MRUs can respond much faster to critical incidents, allowing fires to be suppressed while smaller, medical cases to be tended to while the patients are more stable and of course to give professional eyes and ears on scene to dispatch so resources can be better allocated to the emergency.

There are many forms of MRUs.  Medical MRUs can have emergency physicians, emergency nurses, emergency paramedics, emergency medical technicians or advanced first aiders working on them. The scope of practice and the equipment carried is determined by the agency they are working for and the training level of the rider. Advanced ALS MRUs are capable of many complicated interventions including highly invasive procedures. Fire MRUs usually have tank of water and a high pressure nozzle using compressed air to atomize the water vapor to maximize its efficiency. These fire MRUs are primarily used to extinguish fires while they are small and easily manageable by quickly arriving on scene before the fires grow in size and spread. Rescue MRUs usually carry compact, battery powered, powerful extrication tools that can be used to free victims trapped in cars and structures.  All MRUs make ideal fast response units.
